Veronica gentianoides (Gentian Speedwell)

Gentian Speedwell

Veronica gentianoides, Gentian Speedwell, Blue Flowers, Blue Veronica, Blue Speedwell

Veronica gentianoides (Gentian Speedwell) is a delicate-looking herbaceous perennial forming a dense mat of bright glossy green, ovate leaves from a creeping rootstock. In late spring or early summer, the foliage is topped by leafy stems bearing loose racemes, 10 in. long (25 cm), of small, pale blue to almost white flowers adorned with darker veining. Gentian Speedwell is perfect for the front to mid-border and is useful in the rock garden thanks to its mat-forming tendencies.

  • Grows up to 1-2 ft. tall and wide (30-60 cm).
  • Performs best in full sun to part shade, in loamy, moderately fertile, moist, well-drained soils.
  • Perfect choice for beds and borders, garden edging, cottage gardens, rock gardens, or as a groundcover.
  • Easy to grow, this Speedwell requires very little care and is fairly pest and disease-free. Keep an eye out for powdery mildew.
  • Remove spent flowers to encourage compact habit and good flowering in the following year.
  • Propagate by division in autumn or spring.
  • Native to the Caucasus.
