Veronica prostrata (Prostrate Speedwell)
Prostrate Speedwell, Rock Speedwell, Harebell Speedwell, Veronica austriaca var. dubia, Veronica rupestris
Award-winning Veronica prostrata (Prostrate Speedwell) is a vigorous semi-evergreen perennial forming a brightly colored mat of short, erect racemes of pale to deep blue starry flowers in late spring to early summer and sporadically until fall. The plant can be entirely covered in flowers in the spring, providing up to 4 weeks of brilliant color throughout the garden. Even when not smothered with flowers, this tough little plant remains attractive thanks to its lush foliage of serrated, ovate to linear, dark green leaves. This is a great plant for the front of the garden, rockeries, edging or as a groundcover. Long-lived, Prostrate Speedwell can withstand significant abuse and persist for many years if properly sited.
- Winner of the prestigious Award of Garden Merit of the Royal Horticultural Society
- Grows up to 6-8 in. high (15-20 cm) and spreads indefinitely by prostrate stems. If the foliage mat becomes too vigorous, it may be pruned to desirable proportions.
- Performs best in full sun to part shade, in average, medium moisture, well-drained soils. Drought tolerant once established.
- Perfect choice for cottage gardens, rock gardens or containers.
- Easy to grow, this Speedwell requires very little care and is fairly pest and disease-free (some susceptibility to powdery mildews and downy mildews).
- Deer and rabbit resistant.
- Plants may be sheared after flowering to promote new foliage growth.
- Propagate by seed or division
- Native to Europe.
