Germany - The Best Plants to Grow in Your Garden

Germany’s climate and weather patterns play an important role when selecting plants for a garden. The country is primarily in hardiness zones 7 and 8, although some areas in the mountains might fall into zone 6.

Germany enjoys a temperate seasonal climate with moderate to heavy rainfall throughout the year. Winters can range from fairly mild to very cold, with temperatures dropping below freezing, especially in the eastern and southern regions. Summers vary from mild to warm, typically ranging from 20°C to 30°C.

When selecting plants for a garden in Germany, it’s crucial to choose species that can withstand occasional frosts and cold winters but also enjoy warm summers. Native plants, such as German chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla), European beech (Fagus sylvatica), and European larch (Larix decidua) are great choices since they are well-adapted to local conditions.

Germany is known for its beautiful forest landscapes, so many types of trees and shrubs, such as hornbeam or linden do well here. Flowering plants like tulips, daffodils, and crocuses are also widespread, and they add color to gardens in the spring. In summer, perennial plants like echinacea, hostas, and various ornamental grasses can provide interest.
