Fast-growing and stately, Grevillea robusta (Silky Oak) is an evergreen tree of great beauty. Pyramidal when young, it develops a few horizontal limbs when older, giving it a broader top. Mature specimens produce a striking display of large, rich, bright golden orange flowers, up to 5 in. long (12 cm), in dense, one-sided spikes in spring-summer. Equally attractive is the foliage of olive-green, fern-like leaves, to 12 in. in length (30 cm), silvery underneath. Grevillea rosmarinifolia is a dense and bushy evergreen shrub of loose, arching, graceful habit with rosemary-like leaves which contrast nicely with the red spidery flowers. Reminiscent of the culinary rosemary, the foliage is linear, glossy, dark green on top and downy silvery underneath, to 2 in. long (5 cm). Borne in dense terminal clusters, deep rose-red flowers are produced in pairs along the branches from late winter through to late summer, and occasionally at other times. They open in succession from curling buds, the curled part of the flowers straightening out to make the spider legs. These spectacular and unique flowers are full of nectar and attract birds, bees and insects to your garden. This plant is tolerant of heat, drought and wind everywhere except in hot, low desert climates.
