Ajuga tenorei Princess Nadia (Bugle) is a ground-hugging, evergreen perennial prized for its variegated foliage, which quickly forms a dense carpet of attractive rosettes. Emerging rosy-pink, the small leaves mature to green with creamy margins. Blooming in spring and again in late summer, dense, upright spikes of deep blue-purple flower spikes appear above the foliage. More compact than its commonly grown cousin (A. reptans), this Ajuga variety is valued as a colorful groundcover that remains attractive most of the year. Thriving in shady areas where grass has difficulty growing, it is great for woodland gardens. Low-maintenance and highly versatile, its wonderful foliage colors make it perfect for planting under trees or shrubs, or on banks or slopes. Great for patio containers too!

  • Grows up to 6-8 in. tall (15-20 cm) and 12-24 in. wide (30-60 cm).
  • A part shade to full shade lover, it thrives in average, moist, but well-drained soils. Best flowering and leaf color occur when the plant gets at least 6 hours of sun per day. Will tolerate full sun in cooler areas if constant moisture is provided.
  • A remarkably low-maintenance plant, this excellent performer is highly versatile and can be used in many situations: groundcovers, on banks or slopes, under trees or shrubs.
  • Generally pest free. Keep an eye out for powdery mildews.
  • May be mowed after flowering in order to get rid of the spent flower spikes and clean up the planting.
  • Propagate by division, separating rooted stems.
