Arbutus andrachne (Greek Strawberry Tree) is a spreading evergreen shrub or small tree with striking cinnamon-brown bark, peeling and flaking to reveal the attractive inner bark. The leaves are lustrous dark green, 2-6 in. long (5-15 cm). In late spring, clusters of urn-shaped, white flowers can be admired at the tip of the branches. They are followed by small red fruits, 0.5 in. across (1 cm) which persist into winter. Remarkable for the beauty of its bark, this is a very attractive specimen tree. Greek Strawberry Tree dislikes being transplanted. Pick the right spot!

  • Grows up to 20-40 ft. tall and wide (6-12 m).
  • Easily grown in average, acidic, moist, well-drained soils in full sun to part shade. Tolerates the widest variety of soils and climates, but appreciates good drainage. Drought tolerance once established.
  • Great as a specimen plant, foundation plantings, Mediterranean gardens.
  • Virtually disease free and pest free. Watch for aphids or leaf spot.
  • Attracts hummingbirds, butterflies, and birds.
  • Native to the eastern Mediterranean.
