Highly popular, Artemisia schmidtiana ‘Silver Mound’ is a compact, semi-evergreen perennial forming a ravishing silky cushion of finely cut silver foliage. Tiny, yellow nodding flower-heads appear in mid or late summer, but they are ornamentally insignificant and are best cut off to keep the foliage at its best. A great choice as a neutral spacer or framing plant, Silver Mound Artemisia is a graceful addition to the landscape, in combination with perennials whose flowers are mostly in the cool color range (pink, lavender, blue, purple, and even scarlet to maroon). It is one of the few Artemisia not invasive by underground rhizomes.

  • Typically grows up to 8-10 in. tall (20-25 cm) and 10-16 in. wide (25-40 cm)
  • Evergreen in warm winter climates.
  • This foliage plant thrives in poor to moderately fertile, dry to medium moisture, well-drained soils in full sun. Excellent soil drainage is essential. Tolerant of poor soils, dry soils, and drought.
  • Focal point as a single specimen. It fits beautifully in any beds of perennial flowers and is a lovely addition to the herb garden or rock garden. It is a great choice for edging or as ground cover.
  • Deer and rabbit resistant!
  • Low maintenance, this plant is pest-free. Watch for powdery mildews.
  • Propagate by seed, division, softwood or semi-hardwood cuttings
  • Divide every 2 to 3 years (in spring or fall) in order to maintain good vigor
  • Native to Japan
