Begonia 'Looking Glass' (Cane Begonia)

Cane Begonia

Exceptionally beautiful, Begonia 'Looking Glass' is an upright, evergreen perennial noted for its eye-catching foliage of large, silvery leaves, up to 12 in. long (30 cm), adorned with olive-green veins and cranberry-red undersides. In late spring and summer, attractive clusters of pink flowers are an added bonus. Fast growing, it makes a valuable contribution to shady landscapes or containers.

  • Grows up to 24 in. tall and wide (60 cm).
  • Prefers part shade and fertile, moist and well-drained soils. Will not tolerate continuous direct sunlight or waterlogging. Water moderately when in growth and apply a balanced liquid fertiliser at alternative waterings. Applying a winter mulch will increase the survivability in borderline areas.
  • Cut back over-long canes to 2 or 3 buds in late spring.
  • Propagate by stem cuttings.
  • Watch for caterpillars, mealybugs, thrips, vine weevils, powdery mildews, stem rot and rhizome rot.
