Noted for its winter blooms and sweet fragrance, Begonia solananthera (Brazilian Heart Begonia) is a scandent (climbing) species found in Brazil in 1859. It sports heart-shaped, glossy green, evergreen leaves, about 2 in. long (5 cm), and delightfully scented clusters of pearly white flowers, which dangle from the leaf axils. Blooming profusely in late winter and early spring, the blossoms are adorned with crimson centers, hence the common name of ‘Brazilian heart’. The cascading habit of this Begonia species makes it perfect for hanging baskets. This lovely Begonia will richly reward the grower for his care.

  • Winner of the Award of Garden Merit of the Royal Horticultural Society.
  • Grows up to 20 in. tall and across (50 cm).
  • Prefers partial shade and light, rich, moist, and well-drained soils. Provide good air circulation. Grow in a hanging basket lined with moss to allow water to drain through, but not to dry out. Keep out of the direct sun and avoid wetting the leaves.
  • Propagate by seed or by cuttings
  • Regularly pinch out the growing tips to encourage bushiness.
  • Toxic to dogs, toxic to cats, toxic to horses.
  • Native to Brazil.
