Bidens laevis (Smooth Beggartick)
Smooth Beggartick, Smooth Bidens, Smooth Bur Marigold, Larger Bur Marigold, Brook Sunflower, Bidens elegans, Bidens nashii, Helianthus laevis
Bidens laevis (Smooth Beggartick) is a fast-growing annual or short-lived perennial boasting a profusion of bright yellow daisies held on long erect stalks. Blooming from early summer to mid-fall, the large blossoms feature 7-8 bright yellow ray florets surrounding a brown center disc. The flowers are a good pollen and nectar source for bees, butterflies, and other beneficial insects. They are carried atop upright stems clad with narrow lance-shaped leaves, 2-6 in. long (5-15 cm), with finely toothed edges and pointed tips. The flowers give way to sharply barbed achenes. They tend to bend down under the weight of the seeds. Smooth Beggartick is native to the southern half of the United States, where it grows in wetlands, including estuaries and riverbanks. It is suitable for growing along bogs, marshes, ponds, or streams.
- Grows up to 1-6 ft. tall (30-180 cm). Will self-sow generously.
- Performs best in full sun or part shade in moist to wet soils. Best flower production occurs in full sun. This plant is tolerant of sand, loam, and clay.
- Welcomed addition to bog gardens, native plant gardens, along ponds and streams.
- No serious pest or disease issues.
- Propagate by seed (no treatment).
- Native to North, Central, and South America.
