Spectacular in bloom, Calylophus lavandulifolius (Lavendar-leaf Sundrops) is a low, mound-forming perennial boasting showy clear yellow flowers, 2 in. across (5 cm), each with four, fringed petals. Blooming in flushes every 4-5 weeks from late spring to fall, the blossoms fade to a pinkish or purplish color. They are borne atop grayish stems covered with a dense velvety pubescence. The leaves are simple, alternate, narrow and gray. Native to western North America, Calylophus lavandulifolius can be found growing on dry, open, rocky slopes. Unlike many other evening primrose species, Calylophus lavandulifolius blooms during the day, and it often forms colonies of dozens of plants. A valuable plant for hot, dry locations and when mixed with desert perennials. Provides a bold splash of color in the summer garden.
- Grows up to 8 in. tall (20 cm) and 10 in. wide (25 cm).
- Best in full sun or light shade in gravelly, dry, well-drained soils. Little supplemental watering is necessary if new plants are established early in the season.
- Great choice for prairies and meadows, wildflower gardens, rocky slopes and naturalized areas.
- No serious pest or disease issues.
- Propagate by seed or cuttings taken in late spring.
- Native to western North America.
