Resembling forget-me-nots, Cynoglossum grande (Western Hound's Tongue) is a non-invasive herbaceous perennial with large, arrow-tip shaped, long-stalked, mostly basal leaves, up to 12 in. long (30 cm). In spring, the foliage is topped by clusters of small, five-lobed, bright to deep blue flowers adorned with white centers. Cynoglossum grande grows from a modified rhizomatous taproot that can produce many rosettes from a single root system. Native to western North America from British Columbia to California, Western Hound's Tongue grows in shady areas in woodland and chaparral. This charming perennial flower provides attractive seasonal color in dry shade areas. Adding drama to the woodland garden, it goes dormant in summer when the ground dries up.

- Easily grown in fertile, well-drained soils in partial shade. Requires little water. Drought tolerant once established.
