Prized for its brilliant variegated foliage, Daphne odora ‘Aureomarginata’ (Winter Daphne) is a compact, rounded, evergreen shrub with delightfully fragrant clusters of purplish-pink flowers in early to mid-spring. Fluttering above the foliage, the blossoms may give way to tiny red fruits in late summer. The evergreen foliage of leathery, dark green leaves, 4 in. long (10 cm), is adorned by striking, creamy gold margins. A compact and highly ornamental flowering shrub that is also noted for having slightly better winter hardiness than the species. Plant it where you will be able to enjoy its wonderful perfume: near a doorway, along a path, near your patio or deck.

  • Grows to 3-4 ft. tall (90-120 cm) and 2-4 ft. wide (60-120 cm).
  • Performs best in fertile, moisture-retentive but well-drained soil in a sheltered position in light, open, or dappled shade. Site carefully, this shrub resents transplanting.
  • Plant as a specimen, or in shrub borders, wall side borderscity gardens, or cottage gardens. Great for foundation plantings or as a flowering hedge.
  • No serious pest or disease issues. Keep an eye out for aphids and slugs.
  • Needs little or no regular pruning. Prune immediately after flowering.
  • Propagate by semi-hardwood cuttings or grafting.
  • All parts are highly toxic if ingested and sap may irritate the skin. Wear gloves and other protective equipment when handling.
  • Toxic to dogs, toxic to cats, toxic to horses, toxic to humans.
  • Daphne odora species is native to China and Japan.
