Dichelostemma congestum (Ookow) is a cormous perennial boasting showy rounded clusters packed with 6-15 lasting lilac-purple flowers in early summer. Attractive to bees, they are borne atop straight and slender stems above the foliage of narrow, grassy leaves that die down as the flowers open. Adding interest and movement with the slightest breeze, Ookow is a great choice for the dry garden and looks enchanting laced through other perennials or sun loving grasses.

  • Grows up to 24-36 in. tall (60-90 cm) and 3-4 in. wide (7-10 cm).
  • Easily grown in dry to medium moisture, well-drained soils in full sun. Keep warm and dry after flowering. Drought tolerant.
  • Great for beds and borders or containers. Spectacular in large sweeping drifts.
  • Virtually disease and pest free
  • Propagate by seed, or remove offsets in late summer.
  • Plant 4 in. deep (10 cm) in fall.
  • Native to British Columbia, Canada, parts of western Washington, much of western Oregon, and northwestern California.
