Dierama pulcherrimum (Angel's Fishing Rod)
Angel's Fishing Rod, Fairy Wand, Wandflower
Dierama pulcherrimum (Angel's Fishing Rod) is an elegant, evergreen perennial featuring long, gracefully arching stems adorned with nodding, bell-shaped, pale pink to magenta to white flowers from early to late summer. The blossoms open in sequence along the wiry stems as the season progresses. They overhang gorgeously above a clump of long, narrow, grass-like leaves that are evergreen in mild winter climates. Dierama pulcherrimum requires very little attention and makes a truly unique display in the summer garden. When a breeze passes through, nothing can beat the wafting this plant shows off. Particularly striking when sited above a low wall, against a background of dark green shrubs, or near a pond or pool where it can be reflected for double the pleasure.
- Growing up to 4-5 ft. tall and wide (120-150 cm). Out of flower, it forms a clump up to 2 ft. tall and wide (60 cm).
- Easily grown in full sun, in humus-rich, well-drained soils though somewhat moisture retentive. Tolerant of wind as well as coastal conditions.
- Stunning in beds and borders, cottage gardens, Mediterranean gardens, gravel gardens, or coastal gardens. Great for banks and slopes too! Dierama does not like being in containers for too long, and once established generally resents being moved.
- Generally disease and pest free. Deer resistant
- Clean up any winter-damaged foliage by cutting to the base in spring.
- Propagate by seed in containers in a cold frame as soon as ripe. They may resent disturbance so leave until really congested before the division of clumps in spring. Do not allow the corms to dry out. They may take 1-2 years to flower freely again
- Native to South Africa
