Hibiscus syriacus Sugar Tip® (Rose of Sharon)
Rose of Sharon Sugar Tip®, Shrub Althea Sugar Tip®, Hibiscus syriacus 'America Irene Scott' PP20579
Hibiscus syriacus Sugar Tip® (Rose of Sharon) is a semi-dwarf, bushy deciduous shrub of graceful habit, noted for its soft pink, fluffy, double flowers, packed with more than 40 petals, sometimes adorned with raspberry tints. Blooming prolifically from midsummer to fall, each flower lasts about one day and stands out against the beautifully variegated foliage. The slightly blue-green leaves feature creamy-white patterns around the edges, creating a harmonious pairing with the soft pink flowers. A beautiful shrub that adds beauty and interest before and beyond the bloom time.
- Typically grows up to 5-6 ft. tall (150-180 cm) with a spread of 4-6 ft. (120-180 cm). This is a sterile cultivar that does not produce viable seed.
- A full sun lover, this plant is best grown in average, medium moisture, well-drained soils. Prefers moist, organically rich soils, but tolerates poor soils. Tolerant of drought, salt, heat and humidity.
- Fairly pest and disease free. Watch for aphids, mealybugs and thrips. Deer resistant.
- Plant in shrub borders for dramatic summer blooms. Great flowering shrub for foundation plantings, hedges or screens.
- Prune to shape in spring. Pruning back to 2-3 buds in late winter may produce bigger blooms.
- Propagate by semi-hardwood cuttings
