Noted for its silver-green foliage, Hypericum kalmianum Cobalt-n-Gold™ (Kalm St. John’s Wort) is a shrub of dense, neatly rounded habit with showy, golden yellow flowers in late spring or early summer. They are borne in flat clusters at the tips of upright branching stems and blanket the shrub. Each cup-shaped flower presents 5 petals surrounding a prominent tuft of golden stamens. The foliage of linear silver-green leaves provides a lovely backdrop for the bright golden blossoms. It turns warm shades of yellow, orange, and red in the fall, revealing an attractive exfoliating bark. Cold hardy, drought tolerant, and deer resistant, this shrub provides multi-season appeal and is a colorful option to use throughout any landscape.

  • Grows up to 2-3 ft. tall (60-90 cm) and 4-5 ft. wide (120-150 cm).
  • A full sun to part shade lover, this plant is easily grown in medium moisture, well-drained soils. Prefers moist, rich, sandy loams but tolerates poor, rocky or wet soils. Drought and salt tolerant.
  • Low maintenance, this plant is also generally pest and disease free. Deer resistant.
  • Perfect as a specimen or massed in borders, rock gardens, slopes, naturalized areas. Makes an excellent groundcover.
  • If pruning is required, cut back to shape in late fall but do not cut back all the way to the ground.
