Lobelia x speciosa 'Vedrariensis' (Lobelia)

Lobelia 'Vedrariensis', Hybrid Purple Lobelia, Purple Cardinal Flower

Perfect for the summer garden, Lobelia x speciosa 'Vedrariensis' is a vigorous, upright perennial enjoying long spires of dark violet flowers atop dark green leaves flushed with purple from midsummer to early fall. Quite an architectural plant which adds vertical interest to the landscape! This species is the result of a cross between Lobelia cardinalis, Lobelia fulgens and Lobelia siphitica.

  • Typically growing 3-4 feet tall (90-120 cm) and 1-3 ft. wide (30-90 cm), this well-branched Lobelia thrives in average, medium to wet, well-drained soils in full sun to part shade. Appreciates some shade from hot afternoon sun and loves a lot of moisture.
  • A welcomed addition to beds, borders, containers, cottage gardens and near ponds or streams.
  • A magnet for hummingbirds, it also attracts butterflies and swallowtails and is deer and rabbit resistant.
  • Ingestion may cause discomfort
