Malus 'Van Eseltine' (Crabapple)
Crabapple 'Van Eseltine', Crab Apple 'Van Eseltine'
Noted for its elegant form and ravishing blossoms, Malus 'Van Eseltine' is an upright deciduous tree of narrow, vase-shaped form that is perfect for gardens with limited space. Opening from deep rose-red buds, masses of fragrant, large double flowers, up to 2 in. across (5 cm), packed with up to 19 pale pink and white petals appear in mid-late spring. Both colors show at the same time, creating a pretty two-tone effect. The flowers are followed by small yellow fruits, 0.7 in. (1.8 cm), with reddish cheeks that mature in fall but do not persist. The foliage of glossy, oval, green leaves turns golden-yellow in the fall. Beautiful in bloom, slow growing, this flowering crabapple is a perfect ornamental choice for small gardens. Some susceptibility to fire blight in some areas.
- Grows up to 18-20 ft. tall (540-600 cm) and 8-10 ft. wide (240-300 cm).
- A full sun lover, this tree is easily grown in moderately fertile, well-drained soils. Once established, it is drought tolerant.
- Perfect as specimen plant, in city gardens or cottage gardens.
- Require only minimal pruning in late winter, to remove damaged, diseased or misplaced growth.
- Toxic to dogs, toxic to cats, toxic to horses.
