Widely cultivated for its delicious fragrance, Origanum majorana (Sweet Marjoram) is an herb used for culinary and medicinal purposes.

What is Sweet Marjoram?

  • Sweet Marjoram is a member of the mint family, Lamiaceae, along with basil, rosemary, sage, oregano, thyme, and lavender.

  • Native to the Mediterranean region and Western Asia, Sweet Marjoram is a bushy sub-shrub forming a mound of highly aromatic, ovate, gray-green leaves. The leaves are more delicate in flavor than those of its cousin, Origanum vulgare (Common Oregano). In mid to late summer, it produces clusters of tiny, two-lipped, white, or pale pink flowers.

  • This herb grows 12-24 inches tall and wide (30-60 cm) and is widely cultivated for culinary and medicinal use.

  • Evergreen in warmer areas, Marjoram is often grown as an annual in cooler climates.

  • Sweet Marjoram is a welcomed addition to beds and borders, cottage gardens, herb gardens, vegetable gardens, Mediterranean gardens, or containers.

  • This plant is low maintenance and relatively disease and pest-free.

Sweet Marjoram Culinary Uses

Sweet Marjoram is a popular herb in cooking, particularly in Mediterranean and European cuisine. It is used to flavor dishes such as soups, stews, sauces, meats (especially poultry and lamb), vegetables, and stuffings. It can also be used to season marinades, rubs, and dressings. Marjoram is often used in herb blends such as bouquet garni and herbes de Provence. The flavor of sweet Marjoram is similar to that of oregano, but milder and sweeter, with a slight hint of balsam.

Sweet Marjoram Medicinal Uses

Sweet Marjoram has been used for medicinal purposes for centuries and is believed to have various health benefits. Some of the traditional medicinal uses include:

  1. Relieving digestive problems: The leaves have been used as a natural remedy for digestive issues such as indigestion, bloating, and gas.
  2. Reducing stress and anxiety: The leaf essential oil is believed to have a calming effect on the body and mind and is sometimes used to treat stress and anxiety.
  3. Relieving menstrual cramps: The leaves are said to have anti-spasmodic properties that can help relieve menstrual cramps.
  4. Boosting respiratory health: The leaves have been used to treat respiratory issues, such as coughs, colds, and bronchitis, due to its expectorant properties.
  5. Improving skin health: The leaf essential oil is sometimes used in skincare products to soothe irritated skin and reduce inflammation.

It is important to note that while Marjoram has been used for these purposes for centuries, there needs to be more scientific evidence to support its effectiveness. Consult a healthcare provider before using Marjoram for medicinal purposes.

Growing Sweet Marjoram

  • Sweet Marjoram thrives in full sun in moderately fertile to poor, dry to medium, well-drained soils in a sheltered site.
  • This herb tolerates heat but is intolerant of high humidity.
  • You can buy young plants or sow the seeds after the danger of frost has passed.
  • Sow seed indoors 6-8 weeks before the last spring frost date or sow seed outdoors two weeks before the last spring frost date.
  • You should soak the seeds overnight to speed up germination.
  • Cover seeds with a light layer of soil and water lightly.
  • Grow indoors until all danger of frost has passed.
  • Transplant the seedlings about 12 inches (30 cm) apart.
  • This plant has a good drought tolerance but performs better with regular irrigation. Do not overwater to prevent root rot issues.
  • When flower buds appear, cut back stems to encourage bushy growth. Leaf flavor is also usually best before flowering.
  • In warm winter areas, Marjoram is perennial and can be left in the ground.
  • In colder areas, the herb is an annual. Container plants may be brought indoors in the fall, although they do not always overwinter well.
  • No serious pest or disease issues. Keep an eye out for aphids, red spider mites, and root rot.
  • Marjoram is deer and rabbit resistant and toxic to dogs, cats, and horses.
  • Propagate by seed, or by division or basal softwood cuttings in spring

Harvesting and Storing

Sweet Marjoram is usually harvested just before the plant begins to flower when the flavor of the leaves is at its strongest. Here are the steps for harvesting sweet Marjoram:

  1. Choose the right time: Harvest early in the morning after the dew has dried, but before the sun gets too hot.
  2. Cut the stems: Using sharp scissors or shears, cut the stems of the plant just above a leaf node. Aim to cut about one-third to one-half of the plant’s height.
  3. Hang the stems: Tie the cut stems together in bunches and hang them upside down in a cool, dark place to dry. This process can take several days to a week, depending on the humidity and temperature.
  4. Store the dried Marjoram: Once the leaves are dry and crumbly, remove them from the stems and store them in an airtight container. Dried leaves can be stored in a cool, dry place for several months.

Note: You can also freeze fresh Marjoram by chopping it and storing it in an airtight container or freezer bag. Frozen leaves will keep for several months.

Companion Planting

Sweet Marjoram is commonly used as a companion plant in vegetable gardens as it enhances the flavor of vegetables and repels harmful pests. Here are a few common companion plants:

Vegetables: Some vegetables that are commonly planted with sweet Marjoram include Celery, Corn, Eggplant, Onions, Peas, Potatoes, Radishes, and Tomatoes.

Herbs: Marjoram pairs well with other herbs such as Basil, Chives, Oregano, Parsley, Sage, Thyme, Lavender, and Rosemary.
