Phlomis lanata (Woolly Jerusalem Sage) is a compact evergreen shrub with architectural whorls of deep yellow flowers over a long season. Blooming from spring to summer, the showy flowers appear on short stems above the foliage. Additional flushes of bloom may occur throughout the growing season if the stems are promptly cut back after flowering. Reminiscent of sage, the foliage of lance-shaped, deeply-veined, gray-green leaves, up to 1 in. long (2.5 cm), is however not aromatic. Seed heads can be left over winter for their effect.

  • Grows up to 2-3 ft. high (60-90 cm) and 4-6 ft. wide (120-180 cm).
  • Performs best in full sun to light shade in fertile, dry to medium moisture, well-drained soils. Drought tolerant once established.
  • Very useful and adaptable in the garden. Excellent choice for the dry sunny border, cottage gardens, or coastal gardens.
  • Low maintenance and generally disease free. Keep an eye out for leafhoppers. Deer resistant.
  • Seed heads can be left on for winter interest.
  • Propagate by softwood cuttings in summer or division in the spring. Propagate by seed in late spring under cover.
  • Native to Crete.
