Native to Texas, Phlox drummondii (Annual Phlox) is an erect annual boasting a profusion of showy, bright rose-red, pink, or white trumpet-shaped flowers, 1 in. across (2.5 cm), in flat clusters in early spring to early summer. In cool summer climates, Annual Phlox will continue to bloom throughout summer. Borne at the tips of the stems, the fragrant blossoms are favorites of bees, butterflies and hummingbirds, and other pollinating insects. They rise above the stem-clasping foliage of soft, hairy, and sticky dark-green leaves. Annual Phlox dies back after going to seed, so you may want to plant it with summer and fall-blooming wildflowers. Treasured in gardens since the 1800s, this sweet-smelling versatile annual is a terrific addition to flower beds, containers, hanging baskets, rock gardens, and short-grass or wildflower meadows.

  • Grows up to 6-12 in. tall and wide (15-30 cm). Will self-seed in the garden for an abundant floral display the following year.
  • Thrives in full sun or part shade in fertile, medium moisture, well-drained soils. Although it prefers sandy, fertile soil, it can be established in a variety of well-drained soils, including alkaline substrates.
  • Excellent choice for rock gardens, cottage gardens, or as a ground cover. Perfectly suited to containers.
  • No serious pest or disease issues. Keep an eye out for powdery mildew, and spider mites. Crown rot may occur in poorly drained soils. Deer resistant.
  • Flowers should be deadheaded regularly (to the extent practicable) to promote blooming and growth.
  • Propagate by seed.
  • Native to Texas and introduced in the southeastern United States.
