Pinus nigra (Austrian Pine)

Austrian Pine, Black Pine, Calabrian Pine, Corsican Pine, Larch Pine, European Black Pine

Pinus nigra (Austrian Pine) is a medium to large evergreen tree of broad and conical habit when young, developing an irregular, dense, spreading flat-topped crown atop a short straight trunk over time. The lush foliage of dark green, often curved and slightly twisted needles, is borne in bundles of two and persists for 4-7 years on the tree. The ovoid cones are green when young, ripening gray-buff to shiny yellow-buff. They open over the winter and fall in the third spring. Very attractive on mature trees, the bark is thick, scaly-plated, gray-brown to pinkish. Makes an excellent specimen, screen, or windbreak.

  • Grows up to 40-60 ft. tall (12-18 m) and 20-40 ft. wide (6-12 m).
  • Performs best in full sun in moist, well-drained soils. Tolerates clay soils, urban pollution, salt, and drought once established. Thrives better than other pines in chalky soils.
  • Perfect for coastal gardens, cottage gardens, hedges, and windbreaks.
  • Watch for aphids, adelgids, sawflies, and pine shoot moths. Easy to grow, easy to care for, and rarely browsed by deer.
  • No pruning is required.
  • Native to Southern and Eastern Europe.
