Pinus wallichiana (Bhutan Pine)

Bhutan Pine, Himalayan Pine, Himalayan White Pine, Blue Pine, Pinus griffithii

Regarded by some as the most beautiful pine species, Pinus wallichiana (Bhutan Pine) is an elegant evergreen conifer of broad-pyramidal habit with horizontal lower branches and slightly ascending upper branches. Old specimens usually retain their lower branches. The foliage consists of long, slender, drooping blue-gray needles, 8 in. long (20 cm), borne in bunches of five and persisting for 3-4 years. They arch gracefully over and provide a feathery and soft appearance. Clusters of very resinous, banana-shaped, bluish-green cones, 10 in. long (25 cm), are held erect when young. They turn light brown and become pendants at the end of their first year. The gray-green bark is smooth, turning dark-gray and fissured in scales with age. Grown for its attractive foliage and decorative cones, Bhutan Pine is an excellent specimen pine. It is also valued for its relatively high resistance to air pollution.

  • Recipient of the prestigious Award of Garden Merit of the Horticultural Society.
  • Grows up to 30-50 ft. tall (9-15 m) and 20-35 ft. wide (6-10 m).
  • Performs best in full sun in moist, well-drained soils and sheltered from strong winds.
  • Keep an eye out for pine adelgid, aphids, honey fungus, and tree rusts. Deer resistant.
  • No pruning is required. Remove competing leaders if necessary
  • Propagate by seed sown in containers in a cold frame in late winter. Retain in pots for two years.
  • Native to the Himalayas.
