Primula capitata (Round-Headed Himalayan Primrose)
Round-Headed Himalayan Primrose
Perfect for poorly drained sites, Primula capitata (Round-Headed Himalayan Primrose) is a fascinating semi-evergreen perennial with dense, flattened clusters of tubular, deep violet-purple flowers from late spring to early fall. Lasting for up to 4 weeks, each eye-catching blossom is borne on erect stems frosted with silvery-white 'farina'. The contrast of the white stems with the dark violet flowers is very beautiful. The flowers arise from a rosette of oblong, pale green, mealy leaves. Native to India and Tibet, this perennial thrives in damp, shady environments and makes great cut flowers. Perfect for a moist rock garden or in light shade beside a stream or pond.
- Grows in clumps, up to 10-12 in. tall and wide (25-30 cm).
- A part shade lover, it is best grown in humus-rich, consistently moist, neutral to acid soils. This plant may be grown in full sun in cool summer areas, provided the soil remains moist. Mulch this plant to help maintain the soil moisture and keep the roots cool. Wet soil tolerated.
- This plant is very versatile and can be used in partially shaded beds and borders, in cottage gardens, rock gardens, bog gardens, or along streams and ponds.
- Propagate by division in early spring or propagate by seed sown from autumn to spring
- Deer and rabbit resistant. Watch out for pests such as aphids, vine weevil, slugs and glasshouse red spider mite. May be affected by primula leaf spot.
- Native to SE Tibet, Bhutan
