Sidalcea malviflora (Checker Bloom)
Checker Bloom, Miniature Hollyhock, False Mallow, California Checkerbloom, Checker Mallow, Dwarf Checkerbloom, Wild Hollyhock
Spectacular when in full bloom, Sidalcea malviflora (Checker Bloom) is a perennial wildflower boasting spikes of 2-inch-wide flowers in shades from pale pink to bright rosy purple. The flowers open in the morning and twist closed at night. Blooming in mid-late summer for well over a month, they are reminiscent of Hollyhocks but do not have their dominating height or aggressive self-seeding. Attractive to butterflies, bees, and hummingbirds, the blossoms are borne along erect stems above dense tufts of dark green, palmately lobed, fleshy leaves. Excellent cut flowers. Great for cottage gardens. Native to the West Coast of the United States, from Washington to California, and into northwestern Baja California, Checker Bloom grows naturally in the coastal prairie, coastal sage scrub, dry, open flats with grassland, meadows, and openings in chaparral, woodland, or forest (oak, redwood, pine or fir), primarily along the coast and in the Coast Ranges, with scattered locations elsewhere.
- Grows up to 2-4 feet tall (60-120 cm) and 12-18 in. wide (30-45 cm). May require staking. This plant reseeds readily.
- Thrives in well-drained soils in full sun to part shade. This plant tolerates a wide variety of soils and prefers damp winter conditions and dry summer conditions.
- Virtually disease free. Keep an eye out for Japanese beetles.
- Remove spent flower stalks for rebloom and to encourage basal overwintering foliage.
- Propagate by seed. Soak in warm water for 6 hrs.
- Native to Oregon, California, and Baja California.
