Solidago canadensis (Canada Goldenrod)
Canada Goldenrod, Canadian Goldenrod, Tall Goldenrod, Giant Goldenrod
Solidago canadensis (Canada Goldenrod) is a rhizomatous, spreading perennial boasting tall, upright, central stems clad with narrowly lance-shaped, sharply-toothed, green leaves, 6 in. long (15 cm). In late summer to late fall, it bears densely packed clusters of yellow flowers along one side of arching branches. Attractive to bees and butterflies, Canada Goldenrod provides a bold splash of color in the late season garden. Easy to grow and low care, this handsome species spreads quickly by creeping rhizomes and self-seeding to form dense colonies. It is a good choice for prairies and meadows.
- Grows up to 4-5 ft. tall and wide (120-150 cm).
- Performs best in full sun or light shade, in average, slightly acidic, dry to medium, well-drained soils.
- Vital ingredient of late summer and fall cottage gardens, prairies and meadows where it adds color and texture.
- Deadhead spent flowers to avoid self-seeding.
- No serious pest or disease issues. Keep an eye out for beetles, aphids, rust, powdery mildew and leaf spot.
- Propagate by seed.
- Native to North America.
