Virginia Marsh St. Johnswort, Hypericum virginicum
Triadenum virginicum (Virginia Marsh St. Johnswort) is a charming perennial wildflower with small delicate flowers, 3/4 in. (1.5 cm), in mid to late summer. Each blossom features five petals, ranging from white to pink to red, and 9 yellow-tipped stamens. The flowers open late in the day and close in the morning. Born in clusters, they attract butterflies and other pollinators, and are followed by small, dry fruits that split open when ripe. The foliage of opposite, ovate leaves is blue-green and turns attractive shades of reddish purple toward autumn. Native to eastern and central North America, Virginia Marsh St. Johnswort occurs naturally in swamps, wetland edges and shores. Previously named Hypericum virginicum, this is a fine hardy plant that is perfect for slightly shaded wet sites, bogs or along streams and ponds.
