Triadenum virginicum (Virginia Marsh St. Johnswort) is a charming perennial wildflower with small delicate flowers, 3/4 in. (1.5 cm), in mid to late summer. Each blossom features five petals, ranging from white to pink to red, and 9 yellow-tipped stamens. The flowers open late in the day and close in the morning. Born in clusters, they attract butterflies and other pollinators, and are followed by small, dry fruits that split open when ripe. The foliage of opposite, ovate leaves is blue-green and turns attractive shades of reddish purple toward autumn. Native to eastern and central North America, Virginia Marsh St. Johnswort occurs naturally in swamps, wetland edges and shores. Previously named Hypericum virginicum, this is a fine hardy plant that is perfect for slightly shaded wet sites, bogs or along streams and ponds.

  • Grows 12-18 in. tall (30-45 cm) and 6-10 in. wide (15-25 cm).
  • Performs best in light shade, in acidic, loamy or sandy, moist to wet, moderately well-drained to poorly-drained organic soils. Virginia Marsh St. Johnswort cannot be in the sun too long or the leaves will scorch, while too much time in the shade will lessen the number of flowers it produces
  • A perfect plant for wetland gardens, bog gardens, near ponds and streams.
  • No serious pest or disease issues.
  • Native to the central and eastern United States and eastern Canada.
