Tropaeolum speciosum, Flame Nasturtium, Scottish Flame Flower, Flame Creeper, Flame Flower, Flame Indian Cress, Red Flowers

Adding a tropical touch to the garden, Tropaeolum speciosum (Flame Nasturtium) is a slender herbaceous climber with a profusion of brilliant, long-spurred, scarlet flowers from summer to fall. Creating a spectacular floral display for months, they contrast nicely against the foliage of dainty, deep green, clover-like leaves. In the fall, the fiery blossoms are followed by a striking display of sapphire blue berries held in red sepals. This attractive, delicate-looking but hardy climber is ideal for scrambling over walls and fences or rambling through evergreen shrubs. Thrives in gardens with cool, moist summers.

  • Recipient of the prestigious Award of Garden Merit of the Royal Horticultural Society.
  • Grows up to 8-10 ft. tall (240-300 cm) and 3-4 ft. wide (90-120 cm). Once established, Flame Nasturtium spreads by underground stems and forms large deep rooting tubers.
  • Performs best in full sun or partial shade in moist, humus-rich, well-drained soils. Plant in cool soil where the roots are sheltered from the direct heat of the sun.
  • Keep an eye out for caterpillars, flea beetles, and blackfly.
  • In early spring, cut the dead growth down to ground level.
  • Propagate by seed or division.
  • Native to Chile.
