Grown for both its foliage and flowers, Veronica spicata subsp. incana ‘Pure Silver’ (Silver Speedwell) is a compact perennial forming a low mound of narrow, toothed, lance-shaped, silver-gray leaves. The 3 in. long leaves (7 cm) are covered with many long white hairs, giving them an overall silver appearance. From mid to late summer, small blue flowers are borne in 3-6 in. long (7-15 cm) terminal racemes and persist for about 4 weeks. ‘Pure Silver’ is a popular edging plant that also provides good foliage contrast. It performs poorly in high heat and high rainfall areas because its hairy leaves trap moisture, resulting in foliar disease.

  • Grows in bushy, upright clumps, up to 12-24 in. tall (30-60 cm) and 9-12 in. wide (22-30 cm).
  • Performs best in full sun, in average, medium moisture, well-drained soils. Tolerates light shade. Thrives with consistent moisture but with sharp soil drainage. Water plants at the base in an effort to avoid wetting the foliage.
  • Perfect choice for borders, cottage gardens, rock gardens or containers. Excellent fresh cut flower.
  • No serious insect or disease problems.
  • Remove spent flowers to promote additional blooms. Shear back the foliage if it becomes worn-looking after flowering.
  • Clumps may be easily divided in spring or early autumn.
