Viola labradorica (Labrador Violet)is a low-growing, spreading, semi-evergreen perennial with purple-tinged, heart-shaped leaves topped with small, dainty, lavender-blue flowers in early to late spring. Each flower sits atop short, leafy stalks. Each plant usually has 2-4 flowering stalks. Native to moist woods in Canada, Greenland, and in the northeastern United States, this sweet little violet is evergreen in milder climates. It is an outstanding little plant between stepping stones or as a ground cover for small areas.

  • Grows up to 3-6 in. tall and wide (7-15 cm), this violet will spread by self-seeding and creeping stems.
  • A full sun to part shade lover, this plant is best grown in average, moist, well-drained soils.
  • This plant is very versatile and can be used in beds and borders, underplanting shrubs and roses, banks and slopes, cottage gardens, rock gardens, woodland gardens, or as a ground cover.
  • Watch for slugs, snails, violet gall midge, powdery mildew, and pansy leaf spot. Deer resistant.
  • Deadhead to prolong flowering.
  • Propagate by seed.
