Perennial Combinations, Plant Combinations, Flowerbeds Ideas, Spring Borders, Summer Borders
A classic ingredient of the perennial border, peony flowers add a dazzling splash of color in the landscape. Pairing them with companion plants such as perennials, flower bulbs or even ornamental grasses, provides accent features in the form of shape, texture, height or color and enhances the beauty of your borders.
Peonies flower for a relatively short period of time, approximately 7-10 days. However, they do not flower at the same time and are classified with a blooming time, ranging from Very Early to Very Late season. Therefore, to fill your garden with continuously blooming peonies throughout the season, you may elect to plant a variety of cultivars, from Very Early- to Very Late season bloomers.
To help you plan your late spring or early summer garden, here is a plant combination, in shades of pink and soft blue, which includes 4 fabulous peonies that will bloom in succession: ‘Paula Fay’ (Early Midseason), ‘Fancy Nancy’ (Midseason), ‘Rozella’ (Late Midseason) and ‘Pink Parfait’ (Late Season).
They are interplanted with 2 lovely Tall Bearded Irises with different flowering seasons for a longer display, ‘Cloud Ballet’ (Midseason), ‘Queen’s Circle’ (Midseason) and with the refreshing Allium caeruleum.
This pink-blue theme is further extended to the rest of the summer with the irresistible and strongly fragrant English Rose ‘Princess Alexandra of Kent’. It is combined with one of the most popular blue-flowering geranium, ‘Johnson’s Blue’ for a long-lasting and delightfully fragrant floral display.
Most plants are fragrant and make excellent fresh cut flowers that can be pleasantly enjoyed at home!
