One of the most floriferous Aloes in South Africa, Aloe microstigma (Cape Speckled Aloe) is an evergreen succulent perennial forming solitary or small clumps of beautiful rosettes of blue-green leaves, which turn reddish brown if suffering from environmental stress. The leaves are adorned with conspicuous white spots, contrasting nicely with the reddish teeth along the edges. This Aloe produces several unbranched spikes of flowers, 3 ft. tall (90 cm), red in bud, and open to orange and yellow-orange. Sometimes noted for their bicolor look, the cheerful flowers brighten the dull winter landscape with their towering warm colors reminiscent of flames on candles.

  • Grows up to 1-2 ft. tall and wide (30-60 cm).
  • Easily grown in well-drained soils in full sun. Tolerates weekly watering in the summer, once a month, or not at all in the winter. It can withstand long periods of drought but will thrive and flower more profusely if watered in the correct season.
  • Great for beds and borders, rock gardens, succulent gardens, or Mediterranean gardens. Ideal as an accent plant in sunny borders or decorative containers.
  • Deer resistant. The flowers produce nectar and are attractive to birds and bees.
  • Virtually disease free. Watch for scale insects and aphids.
  • Aloe microstigma is best grown from fresh seeds sown in summer or fall.
  • Native to South Africa
