Acer shirasawanum 'Moonrise' (Full Moon Maple)

Full Moon Maple 'Moonrise', Shirasawa Maple 'Moonrise', Acer shirasawanum 'Munn 001'

Acer shirasawanum 'Moonrise' (Full Moon Maple) is a compact, upright shrub noted for its spectacular seasonal color and its resistance to disease and leaf burn. Emerging bright red in spring, the palmate leaves, adorned with sharply-toothed lobes, turn lime-green as the season progress, before changing to brilliant shades of orange and red in the fall. Throughout the summer, the contrast between the bright red new growth and the fully opened, fresh chartreuse foliage is absolutely striking. Very decorative, this unique maple cultivar is perfect for small gardens or containers.

  • Grows up to 10-12 ft. tall (300-360 cm) and 5-6 ft. wide (150-180 cm) at maturity.
  • A full sun or part shade lover, this plant is easily grown in moist, organically rich, well-drained soils. Mulch helps retain soil moisture and keep roots cool. Best leaf color in partial shade. Although full sun is tolerated, leaves may scorch in full sun in hot climates.
  • Perfect as a specimen plant in cottage gardens, city gardens .
  • Low maintenance, this plant needs little pruning. If pruning is necessary, prune during the dormant season and avoid pruning in spring when the sap is running. Fertilize in spring before the leaves emerge.
  • May be affected by horse chestnut scale, aphids, verticillium wilt.
  • Propagate by grafting
