Alstroemeria ligtu hybrids (Peruvian Lily)
Peruvian Lily, Lily of the Inca, Parrot Lily
Alstroemeria ligtu hybrids (Peruvian Lily) are densely branched, tuberous perennials with narrow, twisted leaves and a profusion of bright multi-colored, funnel-shaped flowers throughout summer. Long-lasting, these showy perennials in shades of pink, yellow or orange, are often spotted or streaked with contrasting colors. They are excellent border plants, providing striking color and contrast to the perennial border. They are well suited to containers and to the cutting garden as they make excellent fresh cut flowers.
- Grows up to 18-24 in. tall (45-60 cm) and 2-3 ft. wide (60-90 cm). Will self-sow if allowed to set seed.
- Performs best in full sun or light shade and enjoys fertile, moist, well-drained soils. Good moisture is required and dry soils should be avoided. Select a spot that is sheltered from the wind.
- Reliable, easy to grow, low maintenance, beloved by butterflies and other pollinators but ignored by deer.
- Generally disease free. May be damaged by slugs.
- After flowering cut back the faded flower-stems. Deadhead the spent flowers to prevent this plant from multiplying too much via self-seeding.
- Propagate by division in fall or very early spring.
- Contact may cause skin allergies.
