Calanthe sieboldii (Japanese Hardy Orchid) is a terrestrial orchid with bold and showy spires of brilliant yellow flowers, sometimes flushed brown. Blooming in mid to late spring, they are borne on erect stems above the foliage of 2-3 heavily pleated, oblong, evergreen leaves. The foliage usually survives all but the coldest winters within its growing range. Arising from a pseudobulb, Japanese Hardy Orchid will naturalize and spread modestly by bulb offsets, forming a charming clump over time. As attractive in pots and containers as it is in beds and borders, it is an excellent orchid for shade garden conditions and woodland gardens.

  • Grows in clumps up to 18-24 in. tall (45-60 cm) and 12-24 in. wide (30-60 cm).
  • Easily grown in evenly moist, well-drained, humus-rich soil in a sheltered site in partial shade. Under glass grow in terrestrial orchid compost in bright, filtered light with high humidity. The soil should never dry up in summer, and it should never be waterlogged in winter. Make sure to water regularly during the growing season.
  • Calanthe Orchids can withstand a minimum temperature of 14°F (-10°C). It is advisable, in regions with severe winters, to protect them during long periods of freezing. Mulch with composted bark over winter.
  • A lovely addition to beds and borders, city gardens, woodland gardens, or containers.
  • Virtually disease free. Keep an eye out for slugs and snails.
  • Propagate by division of pseudobulbs in spring.
  • Native to Japan, Korea, Taiwan.
