Fast-growing, Callistemon viminalis (Weeping Bottlebrush) is a beautiful evergreen shrub or small tree adorned with pendulous branches clothed with narrow, light green leaves. The plant is covered with dense spikes, up to 6 in. long (15 cm), of bright blood-red flowers that resemble bottlebrushes in late spring and early summer then sporadically. The blooms are a copious source of nectar for birds and hummingbirds. New growth emerges from the ends of the inflorescence and the young leaves are covered with bronze hairs. The flowers give way to woody fruit capsules which release their seeds annually. Weeping Bottlebrush is useful as a screen plant, in erosion control or as a specimen or street tree.

  • Grows up to 20-30 ft. tall (6-9 m) and 15 ft. wide (4.5 m).
  • Easily grown in acidic, moist, well-drained soils in full sun to light shade. Not suitable for a windy area. Drought tolerant but performs best with regular irrigation.
  • Great for foundations, hedges, Mediterranean gardens.
  • Virtually disease free and pest free. Watch for glasshouse red spider mite, mealybugs and scale insects when grown under glass. Deer resistant.
  • Pruning is recommended after flowering to remove most of the spent flowers and encourage an attractive growth habit.
  • Propagate by seed or semi-hardwood cuttings.
  • Native to Australia
