Grand-Flowered Horned Poppy

Glaucium grandiflorum , Grand-Flowered Horned Poppy, Red Horned Poppy, Red flowers, Perennial Poppy, Red Poppy

Glaucium grandiflorum (Grand-Flowered Horned Poppy) is a showy perennial forming a handsome rosette of deeply-cut, scalloped, blue-gray leaves. In summer and fall, rich orange-red poppy flowers, 1.5 in. across (4 cm), are produced on long stems above the foliage. Adding months of color, they are attractive to bees. They give way to long, narrow, seed pods that ripen in late summer to spread their seed around the garden. Glaucium grandiflorum is easy to grow and undemanding. It reseeds freely in good growing conditions, springing up and shining in the garden year after year.

  • Grows up to 30-36 in. tall and wide (75-90 cm).
  • Prefers full sun in poor to moderately fertile, well-drained soils. Provide occasional to little water. Resents root disturbance. Drought tolerant once established.
  • Virtually pest and disease free. Deer resistant.
  • Perfect for beds and borders, coastal gardens, cottage gardens or wildlife gardens.
  • Sow seed in situ in spring or autumn.
  • Roots are toxic if ingested.
  • Native to the Middle East.
