Heuchera 'Cajun Fire' (Coral Bells)
Coral Bells 'Cajun Fire', Alum Root 'Cajun Fire', Coral Flower 'Cajun Fire'
Changing colors with the seasons, Heuchera 'Cajun Fire' (Coral Bells) is a compact evergreen perennial forming a dense, rounded mound of lobed leaves that emerge red in spring, turn deep purple-black in summer before changing to maroon in the fall. Blooming from late spring to fall, masses of small, bell-shaped, white flowers appear on slender stems rising up to 18 in. (45 cm) above the foliage. Fast-growing, this dazzling heuchera combines extremely well with a wide range of colors and helps create wonderful plant combinations in gardens or pots. A sturdy performer that is not only easy to grow, but also requires little maintenance. Wonderful as an accent, in containers or in the landscape.
- Forms a basal mound up to 9 in. tall (22 cm) and 14 in. wide (35 cm).
- Performs best in full sun to part shade in rich, humusy, moist, well-drained soils. If grown in full sun, make sure the soil remains consistently moist or the foliage might decline. Thrives in dry shade, once established. Salt tolerant.
- It is attractive to bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds and is often ignored by deer.
- A spectacular addition to beds and borders, city gardens, cottage gardens, coastal gardens, and woodland gardens and is ideal as a groundcover, edger along paths, or in containers. Fabulous when planted in groups!
- Keep an eye out for vine weevil, leaf, and bud eelworm.
- Propagate by division in autumn. Divide clumps in spring every 3-4 years.
- Remove stems of faded flowers to promote additional bloom. Apply winter mulch after the ground freezes to help prevent root heaving.
