Impatiens arguta (Toothed Busy Lizzie)

Blue Impatiens, Blue Dream Impatiens, Toothed Busy Lizzie, Impatiens roingensis

Tough and hardy, Impatiens arguta (Toothed Busy Lizzie) is an upright perennial with charming sprays of lavender-blue, trumpet shaped flowers, 2 in. long (5 cm), adorned with gold and red markings. Blooming profusely for months in summer and fall, the interesting flowers dangle like porcelain earrings from fleshy red stems. The handsome foliage of deeply-veined, elliptic, finely serrated, dark green leaves, is evergreen in warmer climates. Perfect for the dry shade garden or cascading from a hanging basket.

  • Grows up to 16-24 in. tall (40-60 cm) and 36-48 in. wide (90-120 cm).
  • Performs best in part shade to full shade in humus-rich, moist but well-drained soils.
  • Great for shady and moist areas in beds and borders, cottage gardens or underplanting shrubs and roses.
  • No serious pest or disease issues.
  • No pruning needed other than to cut down stems at the end of the season.
  • Propagate by seed.
  • Native to Bhutan, Nepal, Myanmar, India and China.
