Narrow-Flowered Balsam

Impatiens stenantha, Hardy Impatiens, Narrow-Flowered Balsam, Shade Flowers, Yellow Impatiens

Impatiens stenantha (Narrow-Flowered Balsam) is a compact, trailing perennial with dark red stems clothed with broadly lance-shaped, scalloped, red-flushed, dark green leaves. From summer into fall, spurred, yellow flowers with red-speckled throats, are held above the foliage. Native to the mountains of Nepal and Bhutan, Impatiens stenantha feels at home in cool summer areas and prefers a good degree of shade. It will die with the first fall frost and obligingly reappear in spring.

  • Grows up to 16 in. tall (45 cm) and 20 in. wide (50 cm).
  • Performs best in part shade in humus-rich, moist but well-drained soil in a sheltered position. Mulch well in winter
  • Great for shady and moist areas in beds and borders, cottage gardens, underplanting shrubs and roses or containers.
  • Keep an eye out for slugs, snails, aphids and vine weevils.
  • No pruning needed.
  • Propagate by seed or by softwood cuttings.
  • Native to Nepal, China and Myanmar.
