Justicia aurea (Yellow Jacobinia) is an upright, evergreen shrub with huge dark green, ovate leaves, up to 12 in. long (10-30 cm), and showy flower plumes, 6-10 in. long (15-25 cm), densely packed with tubular, bright yellow flowers. Blooming from mid to late summer, the flowers are attractive to hummingbirds and butterflies. The lush foliage and distinctive flowers make Yellow Jacobinia a natural for a tropical garden. Great for use as a foundation or mass planting in warm climates, it is also terrific for containers or as a houseplant.

  • Cut back older branches to a node right above the ground in fall to produce a good compact plant.
  • Propagate by semi-hardwood cuttings.
  • Generally disease free. Keep an eye out for glasshouse red spider mite and glasshouse whitefly.
