Native to the coastal marshes of the eastern United States, Kosteletzkya virginica (Seashore Mallow) is an erect, branching perennial or subshrub boasting an abundance of hibiscus-like rosy pink flowers, 3 in. across (7 cm), adorned with a central column of yellow stamens. Blooming from early summer to early fall, the blossoms appear singly in the leaf axils or in terminal panicles and contrast nicely against the gray-green foliage. The flowers last only one day, but they are borne in such profusion that the plant can have dozens of flowers open each day. Rich in nectar, they attract butterflies, hummingbirds and other pollinators. The lower leaves to 6 in. long (15 cm) feature 3-5 lobes, while the upper leaves are smaller, either triangular or arrow shaped. Particularly abundant in southern Louisiana, Seashore Mallow thrives in swampy soil and even standing water, but adapts to regular garden soil as long as it is well irrigated.
- Grows up to 3-5 ft. tall (90-150 cm) and 2-3 ft. wide (60-90 cm).
- Performs best in moderately fertile, moist to wet soils in full sun. Can be grown in shallow standing water. Prefers sand, but will tolerate clay. Moderately salt tolerant. Provide a sheltered site to prevent the need to stake.
- Great for native plant gardens, naturalized areas, near ponds and streams.
- No significant pest or disease issues.
- Propagate by seed or softwood cuttings.
- Native to the eastern United States, from New York to Florida to Louisiana.
