Crabapple 'Donald Wyman', Crab Apple 'Donald Wyman'

Regarded as an outstanding Flowering Crabapple, Malus 'Donald Wyman' is a large, spreading deciduous tree with a long season of interest. Opening from pink buds, masses of fragrant, single, white blossoms appear in mid spring, just as the foliage is unfolding. They are followed by abundant clusters of cherry-like, glossy, red fruits, 0.4 in. (1 cm), which persist well into winter. Colorful and decorative, they are attractive to birds. The canopy of toothed, dark green leaves gives a fresh appearance all summer and turns gold in fall, before shedding to the ground. Highly disease resistant, elegant in flower, colorful in fruit, 'Donald Wyman' stars in every season of the year.

  • Winner of the Gold Medal award of The Pennsylvania Horticultural Society and of the Cary Award which recognizes plants that are particularly adequate for New England, offer superior landscape appeal, are winter hardy and pest resistant.
  • Grows fast with a rounded habit up to 15-20 ft. tall and wide (4-6 m).
  • A full sun lover, this tree is easily grown in moderately fertile, well-drained soils. Once established, it is drought tolerant.
  • Perfect as specimen plant, in city gardens or cottage gardens.
  • Require only minimal pruning in late winter or spring, to remove damaged, diseased or misplaced growth.
  • Propagate by chip budding in late summer. Grafting can be carried out in midwinter
