Picea pungens 'The Blues' (Colorado Spruce)
Colorado Spruce 'The Blues', The Blues Weeping Colorado spruce
Picea pungens 'The Blues' (Colorado Spruce) is a small, evergreen conifer of graceful weeping habit with large, bright blue needles borne on its drooping branches. Relatively slow-growing (6-12 in. or 15-30 cm per year), this weeping Spruce can assume different forms and be developed into sculptural shapes. It has to be staked to the desired height, before being allowed to ramble, eventually becoming horizontal with all branches spilling across the ground. Perfect as a focal point in a sunny border where its lush blue spring foliage and architectural shape will make a pleasing contrast with the other plants. Pretty addition to the rock garden too.
- Grows up to 5-6 ft. tall and wide (150-180 cm) after 10 years.
- Performs best in full sun in slightly acidic, moist, well-drained soils. Tolerant of dry sites, air pollution, and salt. Some drought tolerance once established. Generally prefers cool climates and will struggle in hot and humid climate areas.
- Perfect as a distinctive specimen plant in the sunny border or in the rock garden. May be trained to flow along a fence or stone wall.
- Watch for adelgids, aphids and conifer red spider mite. Easy to grow and easy to care for.
- No pruning required.
- Propagate by grafting or semi-hardwood cuttings.
