Rich with a pleasing clove fragrance, Dianthus gratianopolitanus 'Firewitch' (Cheddar Pink) is an evergreen perennial which produces an abundance of brilliant, purplish-pink, small flowers with frilled petals atop wiry stems. Rising from tufted mounds of grassy, blue-gray, silvery foliage, they bloom in mid to late spring, in such quantities that the blossoms literally cover the plant. Some sporadic rebloom in the summer and fall will occur, specifically if the plant is deadheaded regularly. Easy to grow, and perfect for adding a splash of color in the garden, this Cheddar Pink makes an excellent ground cover or rock garden plant. It is not bothered by heat or humidity.
- 2006 Perennial Plant Association's Plant of the Year.
- Growing up to 6-8 in. tall (15-20 cm) and 6-12 in. wide (15-30 cm), this eye-popping Cheddar Pink is quite hardy and sturdy.
- Performs best in full sun in neutral to alkaline, well-drained soils. Light shade is appreciated in extremely hot climates. Mulch with pea stone or gravel to keep foliage clean and dry.
- Extremely versatile, Dianthus gratianopolitanus is ideal for rock gardens, border fronts, rocky slopes, or over stone walls. Effective as a ground cover in small areas or as an edging plant too.
- No serious pest or disease issues. Keep an eye out for aphids, slugs, caterpillars, or fusarium wilt. Deer resistant.
- Deadhead to prolong flowering. After flowering in late spring, the spent flowers should be cut back. This will encourage sporadic repeat bloom later in the season.
- Propagate by terminal cuttings taken and rooted in early summer. Divide every few years in early spring or when the centers start to die out.
- Toxic to dogs, toxic to cats, toxic to horses.
