Picea pungens ‘Thuem’ (Colorado Spruce) is a dwarf, broadly conical, densely branched, evergreen shrub with rigid, powder blue needles. The attractive blue needles hold their color well throughout the year. A slow grower, 1-6 in. per year (2-15 cm), this very charming Colorado Spruce stands out in the garden, specifically in the spring when the new growth is at its most intense blue. Perfect for rock gardens, border fronts and small gardens.
- Grows up to 3-4 ft. tall and wide (90-120 cm).
- Performs best in full sun in slightly acidic, moist, well-drained soils. Tolerant of dry sites, air pollution, and salt. Some drought tolerance once established. Generally prefers cool climates and will struggle in hot and humid climate areas.
- Perfect as a distinctive specimen plant in the rock garden.
- Watch for adelgids, aphids and conifer red spider mite. Easy to grow and easy to care for.
- No pruning required.
- Propagate by grafting or semi-hardwood cuttings.
