Tulip 'Couleur Cardinal', Single Early Tulip 'Couleur Cardinal', Single Early Tulips, Spring Bulbs, Spring Flowers
Quite short, Tulip ‘Couleur Cardinal’ nevertheless has a commanding presence in the early-mid spring garden with its rich, deep-red flowers with a plum blush, all set on dark sturdy stems that withstand wind and rain. Member of the Single Early Tulips, ‘Couleur Cardinal’ is one of the oldest tulips as it was introduced in 1845 (!!!) and has been quite popular since then.
A symbol of spring, tulips are the most popular spring bulbs and most gardeners reserve them a spot in the garden or containers. Grown for their attractive, vibrantly colored flowers, there are currently over 3,000 registered varieties, which are divided into fifteen groups, mostly based on the flower type, size, and blooming period of the tulip.
Single Early Tulips are fabulous as bedding plants and for forcing in late winter. Rising to 10-18 in. tall (25-45 cm) in early-mid spring, they are some of the earliest bloomers, blooming after Fosteriana or Kaufmanniana tulips. They have very strong stems that will withstand wind and rain and feature single, cup-shaped blooms, about 3 in. wide (8 cm). Mid-sized, they offer a rich variety of colors, from white to dark purple, and are often margined or flamed with a contrasting color. As an added bonus, some of them are fragrant as well. Many of these tulips are great for forcing.
