Cranberry, Large Cranberry, Oxycoccus macrocarpus
Native to the northeastern US, Vaccinium macrocarpon (Cranberry) is a low-growing evergreen trailing shrub forming a carpet of green foliage, spreading and rooting from stems to indefinite width. Attractive pinkish-white tiny flowers appear in late spring to early summer. They give way to bright red cranberries that ripen in early-mid fall. The foliage of small, glossy, leathery leaves is bronze in spring, matures to dark green in summer, before turning coppery or purplish in winter. Both ornamental and edible, Cranberry can be massed to form a small-scale groundcover. Commercial growers grow this plant in wet bogs that can be flooded to control weeds and pests and facilitate the harvesting of the crop.
