Vaccinium elliottii (Elliott's Blueberry)
Elliott's Blueberry, High Bush Blueberry, Mayberry, Cyanococcus elliottii
Vaccinium elliottii (Elliott's Blueberry) is a multi-trunked, deciduous shrub of bushy, rounded habit with multiple seasons of interest. In early spring, attractive clusters of small, urn-shaped, white flowers appear on the naked stems. They are followed by abundant, juicy, and edible, black berries in early-mid summer - a delight for birds, wildlife, and humans alike! They can be eaten fresh and are delicious in pies, tarts, jams, and preserves. The elliptical, serrated, glossy dark green leaves, 1 in. long (2.5 cm), turn spectacular shades of scarlet and remain on the bush late into the winter. Bees are the primary pollinators for blueberry flowers and are an essential partner in the production of blueberries. Rich in nectar, the flowers also attract butterflies. The twigs of Elliott's Blueberry are an important browse for deer. Valued for its berries and brilliant fall foliage, Elliott's Blueberry is excellent in shrub borders or planted as a fruiting hedge.
- Grows up to 4-6 ft. tall and wide (120-180 cm).
- A full sun to part shade lover, this plant is best grown in moist, acidic soil, and well-drained soils. Best fruit production occurs in full sun. Avoid soils where lime is present. Plant in a sheltered site. Drought tolerant once established.
- Perfect for coastal gardens, cottage gardens, naturalized areas, as a specimen, or in mass plantings. Can be grown as a hedge or screen too. Great fruiting shrub with Rhododendrons and Azaleas.
- No serious pest or disease issues. Watch out for root rot, cane cankers, mildew, and botrytis. The fruits can be affected by the blueberry maggot, cherry fruit worm, and the spotted wing drosophila.
- Prune the plant after the fruits ripen to prevent it from becoming too tall.
- Propagate by seed, division, layering, or stem cuttings.
- Native to the southeastern and south-central United States, from southeastern Virginia south to Florida, and west to Arkansas and Texas.
