Elliott's Blueberry, High Bush Blueberry, Mayberry, Cyanococcus elliottii
Vaccinium elliottii (Elliott’s Blueberry) is a multi-trunked, deciduous shrub of bushy, rounded habit with multiple seasons of interest. In early spring, attractive clusters of small, urn-shaped, white flowers appear on the naked stems. They are followed by abundant, juicy, and edible, black berries in early-mid summer – a delight for birds, wildlife, and humans alike! They can be eaten fresh and are delicious in pies, tarts, jams, and preserves. The elliptical, serrated, glossy dark green leaves, 1 in. long (2.5 cm), turn spectacular shades of scarlet and remain on the bush late into the winter. Bees are the primary pollinators for blueberry flowers and are an essential partner in the production of blueberries. Rich in nectar, the flowers also attract butterflies. The twigs of Elliott’s Blueberry are an important browse for deer. Valued for its berries and brilliant fall foliage, Elliott’s Blueberry is excellent in shrub borders or planted as a fruiting hedge.
